Project 365

What’s “trending”?

When did that come into our lexicon? The last I knew trend was a noun. I still think “in vogue” is a much more eloquent turn of phrase. I guess they mean about the same thing, although trending seems to apply more to online activity.  So . . . What’s trending?

Project 365 is trending. It has been for a couple of years now. The idea is to post one photo a day for 365 days. Sounds simple enough, and probably will be at first. After the novelty fades, though, it could present a more significant challenge. So why do it?

Well . . . retirement has presented me with time . . . time to rediscover old passions, like photography . . . and time to explore new (for me) activities, like blogging. Project 365 would appear to be a natural blending of the two.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is also trending . . . in the mental health field anyway.  It, too, has been trending for some time now. Among the last professional development workshops I participated in were full day sessions on DBT.  One of the cornerstones of DBT is mindfulness . . . being present “in the moment”.  Sounds like cognitive acrobatics. How can I be present in one moment when the next one is upon me . . . momentarily?                          Photography!

Photography captures moments.  If I use a shutter speed of 1/500 of a second there are millions of moments every day.  I only need to capture one! So I think I’ll give it a try.  I will begin on my birthday and post one photo a day for the 67th year of my Earthwalk. I’m hoping this project will encourage me to approach each day looking for extraordinary moments. Beauty is always around us, but sometimes we miss it because we’re not looking for it. I know some of my days, and consequently some of my pictures, will be dull and boring. I don’t expect a masterpiece everyday. . . but out of 365 there have to be some great shots out there.

Planning to go “live” January 31st.

Soooo . . . Welcome to my Project 365 site, a year long photographic journey with the goal of posting one photo a day for 365 days. I begin with enthusiastic commitment, but I know there will be days when I have to make myself follow through. That’s part of it. By making this public I’m putting it all out there . . . a glimpse into each day of my year. . . the good, the bad and the ugly. Some days I anticipate devoting considerable time on my quest using all my photographic tools. Other days I anticipate grabbing a quick shot with my phone. Whatever the result, I’m going to try to post one shot a day. I’m not sure where this is going to take me, but you’re invited to follow along or check in from time to time.
