A Night at the Cicada Club
This week’s gallery is a photo essay. It combines two of my great passions, photography and ballroom dancing. Sunday evening Lynne and I took our son and his fiancée to the Cicada Club in downtown Los Angeles. With the grandeur of a classic Hollywood musical from the thirties, The Cicada Club is a most unique experience that transports you back in time to the glamorous days of Hollywood’s golden age of nightclubs. http://www.cicadaclub.com/

The photo captions are taken from lyrics of the songs of the era.
“Meet Me at the Copa” by Sammy Cahn

“Cheek to Cheek” by Irving Berlin
“Sleepy Lagoon” by Eric Coates
“Isn’t it Romantic” by Lorenz Hart
“We’ll Meet Again” by Ross Parker and Hughie Charles
“Mr. Bassman” by Johnny Cymbal

This week I tried to capture a little bit of the SoCal feel on our walk from Santa Monica Pier down to Venice Beach.

For many of us living in the Northampton, Massachusetts area, the Spring Bulb Show at Smith College is a “must see” in early March. After a long winter, the colors, textures and fragrances offer welcome relief from the drab landscape outside. It can be quite crowded on weekends, so vist on a weekday if you can. While there, don’t miss “Places for the Spirit, Traditional African American Gardens’, an exhibit of photos from Vaughn Sills’ book of the same name.

Photographing March in New England can be a challenge with lots mud and sticks, and it looks like spring will be arriving late this year. The crocuses and tulips are still buried under at least two feet of snow. I’ll be shooting street scenes, animals and interiors for a while . . . but I will be spending a week in California so stay tuned.
